Driving History Forward

In 1967 Hans-Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher believed they could produce sports cars that would win on the racetrack. In an old mill in the town of Burgstall, Germany, they started with Mercedes-Benz vehicles and optimized the engines to build racing cars with more power and torque.

From these humble beginnings, Aufrecht and Erhard founded AMG® (an acronym using the initials of their last names and the name of Aufrecht’s birthplace) with the mission of engineering, building, and test-racing engines. Continuing to use series production Mercedes-Benz vehicles, they modified and enhanced the engines, and their creations earned victories at many touring-car races and their company a reputation for excellence.

In 1990, after 23 years of a successful working relationship, Mercedes-Benz and AMG® signed an agreement of cooperation that would make their partnership official. Today their dominance persists in engineering cars that embrace ground-breaking technology, innovation, and their signature combination of power and style.
